About our team:

This position is part of the growing academic and professional skills publishing team at Sage. The role sits within a larger editorial team at Sage creating dynamic digital resources for the academic library market.


Could you be our new Commissioning Editor? Are you?

  • At least five years of related experience in higher education publishing, with at least some direct commissioning and contracting work
  • Ability to plan, organise, research, analyse and establish priorities to achieve results
  • Budgeting and cost management skills in the context of content costs
  • Ability to work independently within a team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and creatively solve problems
  • Excellent professional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to turn a product vision into an actionable commissioning plan
  • Ability to edit content to ensure strong fit with strategic product goals and market needs
  • Strong IT skills, specifically Microsoft Office
  • Proven trouble shooting abilities

Your new role:

As Commissioning Editor, you will primarily be commissioning content for an existing, rapidly expanding digital resource sold primarily to the academic library market. With a mix of strong commissioning, relationship-building, and project management skills, you will be someone who works both strategically and independently to deliver upon the ambitious signing goals in a timely manner and within budget. With a keen editorial eye, you will assess content for fit with product goals and work with contributors and editors as they complete their work. You will also work effectively across the organization to ensure that communication with relevant departments is maintained and content-delivery schedules are met.

  • Commission academic and professional skill content primarily for undergraduate students, including text, video, and data
  • Contribute to the strategic editorial plans for new products in collaboration with the Executive Editor to achieve results-oriented growth plans
  • Independently negotiate contracts and other agreements with editors, authors, and other contributors
  • Evaluate content for fit with audience and product vision.
  • Deliver content on schedule and on budget; implement commissioning plans effectively and successfully
  • Clearly and effectively communicate Sage’s vision and product goals to customers and prospective collaborators.
  • Serve as a great teammate by collaborating with team members in product development and product innovation to launch new products
  • Prepare and provide to the Marketing and Sales Departments necessary product and competitor information to enable Marketing and Sales to formulate effective marketing plans
  • Through research, be aware of and highly capable of communicating the evolving pedagogical needs across areas for which you are commissioning content
  • Develop relationships and build a network of potential authors and editors
  • Follow industry news, blogs, and other reports on trends and publishing opportunities in higher education
  • Attend conferences and visit college campuses each year as required
  • Meet with and speak to leading academics in the subject area to ensure that the skills team products meet market needs
  • Help define market research priorities, making campus visits, joining sales calls, and conducting competitive research
